Surfing the Rising Tide of Cyber Threats, Cyber Laws in a Shifting Sea of Geopolitics

Privacy Symposium 2026, Venice

24 April 2026
Conferences

On Friday 24 April, in the Sala Guarana at the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista in Venice, this session first provided some real world examples of the cybersecurity threats that have been trending globally over the last year. To dig into what underpins the approach of the current generation of bad actors, we showed how technological advances are allowing cyber criminals to weaponise AI, leveraging AI tools and technology to carry out cyber-attacks.  One of the most insidious aspects of this phenomenon is that increasingly our human vulnerabilities are being preyed upon. By targeting our human needs and responses, presenting us with information we can no longer fully trust, in the form of, for example, deep fakes, individuals and corporations are being exposed to significant data breaches. If that were not enough, recent evidence confirms that many of the significant cyber-attacks against the private sector as well as national military and civilian infrastructure have been orchestrated by or on behalf of other nation states, which calls into question the efficacy and effectiveness of cyber laws and regulations around the world. We also explored the increased regulatory activity relating to cybersecurity and what might be considered reasonable security over the course of the last 12 months and conclude by proposing a more proactive rather than reactive approach to risk management.
